Clinical and Consulting Psychologist

About

Clinical Training

I received my B.A. in psychology from Stanford University and my Ph.D. in clinical psychology from U.C.L.A. During graduate school, I was trained primarily in cognitive-behavioral work. I sought additional training at the Gestalt Therapy Institute of Los Angeles (G.T.I.L.A.), eventually becoming President. I received training in hypnosis from Jean Holroyd and Michael Diamond at U.C.L.A.’s Neuropsychiatric Institute, plus studied guided imagery with Muriel Fuller. I was in a self-psychology study group with Lynne Jacobs, and currently study interpersonal neurobiology and regulation theory with Allan Schore.

Yoga

I’ve practiced yoga for more than 30 years—Kundalini, Ashtanga, and various forms of power and flow. For the past 5 years, I’ve substituted and conducted Break-Through and Advanced Sequencing Yoga Workshops. Many yoga practitioners seem to find their way to my clinical practice. Meanwhile I’ve gotten deeply involved with mind/body issues. As a result, I bring more and more of my knowledge of yoga more into the room. I especially draw upon techniques for deep breathing and maintaining calm, non-reactivity and equanimity in the face of pain and adversity. This integration of multiple aspects of myself is deeply fulfilling, embodying the true meaning of the word yoga, as “union.”

Professional Activities

I have been very active professionally over the years. I was President of two organizations, the Gestalt Therapy Institute of Los Angeles, as well as the Los Angeles Society of Clinical Psychologists, one of the oldest clinical organizations in the United States. I was a watchdog for psychologists at the Board of Psychology for many years, writing a column in the L.A. Psychologist in order to educate psychologists and open up dialogue between the Board and professionals. I’ve given many clinical talks and trainings, run supervision groups and have trained interns at the Southern California Counseling Center and in private practice.   Curriculum Vitae

Artist

I have done life drawing on and off for many years and did most of the drawings in my latest book, Psyche’s Veil, which contains over 100 images. Most of the art on this website is my own. I believe in the power of expressing ideas through images. My first show of life drawings was at the Waterlily Café in Topanga, in April of 2005. I exhibited drawings from my recent book, Psyche’s Veil, at the Howell/Green Gallery in Topanga in November, 2008. Along with exhibiting drawings, I produced a dance performance based on Psyche’s Veil at Shakti’s Elements in Santa Monica in December, 2009. See Art Prints.
